Wedding Guest Book Alternatives Guests Will Actually Sign

By the Naked Wood Works shop, Pryor, Oklahoma · September 2026

The wedding guest book alternatives guests actually sign are the ones they can see and write on directly, like a wooden signature frame or a round sign with your names engraved in the center. We make both, laser engraved and made to order in Pryor, Oklahoma, sized by guest count so there is room for everyone and nothing ends up in a closet afterward.

Why a sign beats a book

A traditional guest book gets passed around a table, half the guests miss it, and the ones who sign it often write the same few words. After the wedding it goes into a box. A sign changes both ends of that:

  • Guests see it. A large sign on an easel near the entrance is hard to walk past, and people are more likely to stop and sign.
  • Signatures are visible. Guests see what others wrote, which gets more of them to add a real note.
  • It goes on the wall. After the wedding, the sign hangs in the house instead of sitting in storage.

How the signature frame works

The frame is an open border with your last name laser cut in script and mounted raised in the center, with your wedding date underneath. Guests sign the flat frame around the name. Our 3D Last Name Guest Book Sign is our original version. The Mr and Mrs 3D Guest Book Sign adds a small “Mr & Mrs” cut above your name.

Because the center is open, the frame hangs with the wall showing through, which makes it look lighter than a solid sign of the same size.

How the round sign works

The round sign is a solid circle with your names engraved in the middle, usually your last name in large script, first names above and the year below. Guests sign the open space around the names, often in rings working outward. The Round Guest Book Sign and the Round Wedding Signature Sign are two takes on this layout. Round signs look good on an easel at a ceremony and hang well above a mantel or bed.

Choosing a size by guest count

Guest book signs start from $22.00. Sizes and the guest counts they suit:

  • 20 in: 30-45 guests
  • 24 in: 45-55 guests
  • 27.5 in: 55-70 guests
  • 30 in: 65-85 guests
  • 36 in: 90-110 guests
  • 42 in: 125-175 guests
  • 48 in: 200-250 guests

A few things to consider when choosing:

  • Couples and families often sign once. If most of your guests are couples, you may be able to size down.
  • Long messages take more room. If your crowd writes paragraphs, size up.
  • Think about the wall. The sign has to fit where it will hang. Measure the spot above the bed or mantel before you order the 42 or 48 in size.

Choosing a finish

Signs come in four finishes: natural, stained, painted black and painted white. Your finish decides your pens. Natural and stained wood, and painted white, suit dark ink. Painted black needs a white or metallic marker to show. Match the finish to the room it will hang in afterward, not only to the wedding colors.

Pens and markers

Some general tips for signing on wood:

  • Test on the back first. Wood absorbs ink differently than paper, and finishes vary. Write a few lines on the back and let them dry before the day.
  • Pick a fine or medium tip. Very thick markers use up space quickly; very thin pens can skip on wood grain.
  • Choose permanent, quick-drying ink. Water-based ink can bleed along the grain.
  • Put out several pens. Guests arrive in groups. Three or four pens keeps the line moving.
  • Leave a note. A small card saying “Please sign our guest book” and where to write avoids signatures on the raised name.

What couples do with it afterward

The sign can go up as soon as you get home. The Last Name Signature Frame Guest Book is shown hanging over a bed after the wedding, and round signs often go above a mantel or in an entryway. Others lean the sign on a shelf. Either way it becomes a piece of the home with everyone’s names on it.

Ordering

We engrave your names and date exactly as you type them, and each sign is made to order in 3-5 business days. Order well before the wedding so there is time for shipping and for testing pens. Quick answers

What size guest book sign do I need for 150 guests?

The 42 in sign is sized for about 125-175 guests. Count households rather than individuals if couples and families tend to sign together, which may let you size down.

Can guests sign both a frame and a round sign the same way?

Yes. On the frame, guests sign the open border around your raised last name. On the round sign, they sign the open space around the names engraved in the center.

Which finish is easiest to sign?

Natural and stained finishes suit dark ink. Painted black works well with white or metallic markers, and painted white works well with dark ink. Test your pens on the back first either way.

Where should the sign go at the reception?

Put it near the entrance or beside the card table on an easel or flat table, with pens in a cup next to it and a small sign asking guests to add their names.
